Our History

A Journey of Hope & Care

1991

Prabhakar and Abha Goswami, a professor and teacher at the University of Rajasthan, were asked to conduct research into street children and children of prostitutes. Initially, the emphasis was on research, but it soon shifted to practical care for the children.

1992

Abha Goswami packed school books and toys on a bicycle rickshaw and went to children living by the road. She visited three places a day and thus the School on Wheels program began.

1993

I-India was founded as an NGO (non-governmental organisation) by the Goswamis. With a staff of three and a tiny budget the organisation worked full-time for the well-being of street children.

1994

Child Labour Awareness initiative launched.

1995

Integrated Program for Street Children, funded by the Government of India, started.

Nutrition Tracking Program initiation.

1996

Child Inn, a boys home, and Ladli girls home founded.
Janshala, a slum school program, started.
Breastfeeding promotion campaign launched.

2000

Child Line phone service began.

School on Wheels is given its first and second buses.

AIDS awareness program launched.

2002

I-India acquires a jeep-ambulance.

2005

The girls home shifts to larger premises and is renamed “Ganga”.
