Bringing education to children who do not go to regular school. The School on Wheels reaches children where they live — on sidewalks and in spare corners of slums — providing informal schooling, nutrition, medical care and hygiene to those who would otherwise receive none.

A day in the programme
What Happens Every Day
Two teachers travel together in a bus to three centres a day — visiting the same centres every day, six days a week.
2–3 hours of lessons
English, Maths and Hindi taught at each centre. No more than a rug on the ground and a blackboard propped against a wall — but it represents all the education some children will ever get.
Nutritious meal after class
A healthy meal is distributed to every child after each session.
Medical visit — at least weekly
The Ambulance visits at least once a week to check on the children and dispense medicine and treatment.
Daily Shower Bus
Every day the Shower Bus visits each centre and provides the children with a shower and cleansing products.
Beyond the classroom
What Children Learn
In addition to reading, writing and arithmetic, the programme transforms children’s lives in wider ways.
Reading, writing & maths
Social behaviour
The world beyond their neighbourhood
Personal hygiene
Vaccines & hospital access
Dangers of tobacco, drugs & HIV/AIDS
Local communities appreciate the project and, on seeing the results, are invariably eager for it to continue. The teachers are diligent and loving and successfully inspire large groups of children of all ages to attend.
